    AGROBALT returns to Vilnius!

    The agriculture and food industry exhibition AgroBalt will once again be held in Vilnius after an eight-year break, at the Lithuanian exhibition and congress centre Litexpo.

    This year’s show will offer visitors something that’s not so common in the city rush these days – a chance to spend some time with the family in rural surroundings while having fun, enjoying delicious discoveries by getting to know the cuisines of different nations and ethnographic regions of Lithuania, finding out what kinds of animals are grown on Lithuanian farms, meeting Lithuanian horses, dogs, cows, goats and other domestic animals, finding out how milk and other food products are made, and discovering the Lithuanian products that have earned an exclusive AgroBalt Award in 2018 – the golden medal for the products of the century.

    More than 200 exhibitors from Lithuania, Belgium, India, Spain, Italy, China, Latvia, Poland, Macedonia and Romania will present their hottest, most unexpected and little-known products including sweets and desserts, dairy products, fish and seafood, meats, spices, sauces, beverages, vegetables, teas and many other products, which you’ll be able to taste and purchase during the three days of AgroBalt 2018. You can find a complete list of participants here:

    Different ethnographic regions of Lithuania will be located in the outdoor area, where you’ll be able to experience and compare the varied delicacies of the Suvalkiečiai, Dzūkai, Aukštaičiai and Žemaičiai and buy products of national heritage and exclusive foods and beverages.

    In addition, AgroBalt 2018 offers visitors a wide range of entertainment programs for children and adults:

    • The straw maze ‘Find the Road to the Scarecrow’, the educational space ‘Rabbits Valley’ and ‘The Field on the Window’ will occupy the Amusement Meadow
    • On each day there will be concerts on the AgroBalt Stage
    • Daily horse shows will be held in the cattle breeding pavilion, and many domestic animals and breeds will be introduced together with a vote on the most beautifully bred animal
    • Events dedicated to Lithuania’s 100 Years of Independence include the 100-flute orchestra, a 100-step journey through Lithuania, weaving a national centenary braid, and the interactive photo wall ‘Me 100 Years Ago’

    Citizens’ Dialogue Food: how to stop wasting our wealth

    Food: How to Stop Wasting our Wealth

    The numbers are staggering – each year we throw away 88 million tonnes of food in Europe. It makes up 20 percent of the total food produced in the European Union. Food waste is unethical, while the damage to environment is gigantic.

    The European Union aims by 2030 to at least halve the amount of food wasted. How to address this problem? What can each of us do daily to help reduce the waste of food?

    Join the discussion and tell us what you think on this and other hot topics of the European Union with Mr Vytenis Andriukaitis, Member of the European Commission, and the representatives of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste, on 24 May, 4PM, at the European Commission Stand No 5C05.

    “From farm to fork, sustainable food for a healthy lifestyle”

    From farm to fork, sustainable food for a healthy lifestyle

    Much of what we consume every day comes from farms: from our milk, bread, honey, meat, fruit or vegetables to our seafood.

    Europe’s 22 million farmers and agri-workers play a unique role in our society: they produce healthy, quality food for 500 million European Union citizens while taking care of the food security, welfare of animals, the environment and climate change and keeping the countryside alive.

    Furthermore, the farming and the agri-foods industries today represent 44 million jobs and 6 % of European gross domestic product (GDP). Farmers therefore play a vital role in our economy and society: they are today entrepreneurs, using modern farming techniques and diversifying their activities.

    That’s why Europe’s Common Agricultural Policy supports its farmers and helps them fulfilling these important tasks.

    The European Union promotes digital innovation in agriculture and rural areas and invests in modern technology to tackle climate change at farm level and the wider rural community.

    The European Union also makes sure that we can enjoy the safest sustainably produced food in the world.

    Healthy food is part of a healthy lifestyle. At each stage of the food production chain, from farm to fork, the EU safeguards our health by

    • ensuring that food and animal feed are safe and nutritious;
    • preventing food contamination;
    • ensuring a high level of animal health, animal welfare and plant protection;
    • promoting food safety at all stages of the production chain;
    • ensuring adequate and transparent information about the origin, content/labelling and use of food.

    The EU also invests in food research and puts forwards measures to reduce food waste.

    To find out more come and visit European Commission stand (Stand number: 5.C05): taste some European quality and organic products, challenge yourself with our quiz and explore our interactive food chain model!
