Citizens’ Dialogue Food: how to stop wasting our wealth
Food: How to Stop Wasting our Wealth
The numbers are staggering – each year we throw away 88 million tonnes of food in Europe. It makes up 20 percent of the total food produced in the European Union. Food waste is unethical, while the damage to environment is gigantic.
The European Union aims by 2030 to at least halve the amount of food wasted. How to address this problem? What can each of us do daily to help reduce the waste of food?
Join the discussion and tell us what you think on this and other hot topics of the European Union with Mr Vytenis Andriukaitis, Member of the European Commission, and the representatives of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste, on 24 May, 4PM, at the European Commission Stand No 5C05.
(The LT<>EN simultaneous interpretation will be provided)
“From farm to fork, sustainable food for a healthy lifestyle”
From farm to fork, sustainable food for a healthy lifestyle
Much of what we consume every day comes from farms: from our milk, bread, honey, meat, fruit or vegetables to our seafood.
Europe’s 22 million farmers and agri-workers play a unique role in our society: they produce healthy, quality food for 500 million European Union citizens while taking care of the food security, welfare of animals, the environment and climate change and keeping the countryside alive.
Furthermore, the farming and the agri-foods industries today represent 44 million jobs and 6 % of European gross domestic product (GDP). Farmers therefore play a vital role in our economy and society: they are today entrepreneurs, using modern farming techniques and diversifying their activities.
That’s why Europe’s Common Agricultural Policy supports its farmers and helps them fulfilling these important tasks.
The European Union promotes digital innovation in agriculture and rural areas and invests in modern technology to tackle climate change at farm level and the wider rural community.
The European Union also makes sure that we can enjoy the safest sustainably produced food in the world.
Healthy food is part of a healthy lifestyle. At each stage of the food production chain, from farm to fork, the EU safeguards our health by
- ensuring that food and animal feed are safe and nutritious;
- preventing food contamination;
- ensuring a high level of animal health, animal welfare and plant protection;
- promoting food safety at all stages of the production chain;
- ensuring adequate and transparent information about the origin, content/labelling and use of food.
The EU also invests in food research and puts forwards measures to reduce food waste.
